Electrical engineering workshops for students

uczniowie
On 11 March, students from Class 8B of the F. Nowowiejski General Music School in Gdańsk visited our faculty.

Artur Cichowski, PhD Eng., Associate professor, with the active support of the LINTE^2 Laboratory administrators – Aleksy Przystawko Eng. and Dominik Kowalski Eng. – organised electrical engineering workshops for the pupils in the laboratory.
The workshop programme included demonstrations and experiments on the fundamental laws of electrical engineering, tailored to the pupils’ age and level, covering:

  • plasma (plasma sphere – the fourth state of matter)
  • electrostatics (Wimshurst machine – comparing a spark with lightning)
  • electromagnetic induction (coil with a magnet, Faraday’s law)
  • eddy currents, Lenz’s law and the Lorentz force (magnet in tubes made of: plastic, aluminium, copper)
  • the Lorentz force and the left-hand rule (construction and operation of a simple electric motor)
  • Ohm’s law and electrical power (a hand-cranked generator connected to a network analyser, pupils maintaining a set power output and observing changes in the resistance of the filament)
  • controlling the direction of rotation of a DC motor (analysis of the circuit diagram).

The students had the opportunity to see the main laboratory hall, as well as the solar power plant on the roof of the building. They also watched the start-up of a turbogenerator and the operation of a low-voltage switchgear.
