Department of Electrical and High Voltage Engineering

The Department was established in 1945 as the basic unit for teaching and research in the broadly understood theory of electrical engineering, in particular in electrical circuits and the theory of electromagnetism. In its history, the Department has changed its profile of activity, name and organizational forms many times. In the years 1945-1969 it was the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, the founder and head of which was prof. Leon Staniewicz. In the years 1951-1954, after the death of prof. Leon Staniewicz, the Department was looked after by deputy prof. Eugene Kenig. In the years 1954-1965, the position of the manager was performed by prof. Jerzy Dziedzic, and in the years 1965-1969 prof. Piotr Ciechanowicz. In the years 1969-1991, after changing the organization of the Faculty into an institute structure in 1969, the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering was established as part of the Institute of High Voltage and Electrical Apparatus. The head of the department was prof. Jerzy Hryńczuk. In 1991, the previous name was restored to: Theoretical Electrotechnics Department, which in 1999 was then changed to the Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. In the years 1970-2001 the Department and then the Department was headed by prof. Jerzy Hryńczuk. In the period 2001-2009 the management was taken over by prof. Paweł Zimny and in the years 2009-2017 prof. Kazimierz Jakubiuk. In 2017-2019, the Department was headed by prof. Mirosław Wołoszyn. In 2019, the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Control Systems was established under the leadership of prof. Michał Grochowski. In 2021, the name was changed again to: Department of Electrical Engineering and High Voltage Engineering, appointing prof. Jacek Horiszny.

The changes in the name of the Department resulted mainly from the staffing situation and organizational changes of the Faculty.

The didactic activity of the Department mainly concerned teaching basic subjects in the fields of study at the Faculty, but also many other subjects resulting from the competences of the current staff composition, conducted in the fields of study conducted by the Faculty, as well as for other Faculties of the University of Technology. The employees of the Department have developed many textbooks, scripts and teaching materials.

Scientific research was conducted by research teams within the Department as well as by employees of the Department in research teams of the Faculty. These studies were carried out in many thematic areas concerning both the theory and practical applications of electrical engineering and related sciences. Scientific research covered various issues from the theory of electric circuits, electromagnetic field, coupled fields, surge phenomena in electrical and physical systems, signal processing, mathematical modeling of phenomena, numerical methods, as well as new methods and technical systems important for the country's defense, which concerned demagnetization methods ships, detection and location of ferromagnetic objects as well as the use of directed energy. Scientific research was carried out as part of commissioned and own research projects, including many research projects important for the country's defense. The results of research conducted in the Department allowed for obtaining a large number of scientific promotions in the form of doctorates, habilitation and scientific titles both by the staff of the Department as well as by people from outside the Department as well as people from outside the University. As a result of the research, a lot of valuable monographs and publications have been written in Poland and abroad.
