Faculty of Electrical Engineering

With the establishment of the Gdańsk University of Technology in May 1945, the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was established in its structure, but recruitment for the first academic year was carried out separately at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, thanks to which these departments operated independently from the very beginning.

The organizer and the first dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was prof. Kazimierz Kopecki. Apart from him, the faculty staff were: prof. Leon Staniewicz, prof. Łukasz Dorosz, prof. Paweł Szulkin, prof. Ignacy Malecki, deputy prof. Stanisław Trzetrzewiński, adjuncts: Eng. Jan Piasecki, Eng. Mieczysław Rodkiewicz, Eng. Józef Lenkowski.

In the first year of study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, there were about 250 students, including about 220 people in the first year, about 20 people in the second and 11 people in the third and fourth years (mostly students of pre-war universities and courses in POW camps) . The first diploma examination was conducted on September 6 and 7, 1946, and was taken, among others, by Stefan Roszczyk and Tadeusz Lipski, later professors of the Faculty.

In the initial period after the establishment of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the following departments operated within it:

  1. Department of Physics I.
  2. Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering
  3. Department of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
  4. Department of Electrical Measurement and Machine Measurements
  5. Department of Electrical Devices, Networks and Electricity
  6. Department of High Voltage
  7. Department of Electrical Machines and Electric Drive
  8. Department of Electric Traction
  9. Department of Teletechnics
  10. Department of Radio Engineering
  11. Department of Applied Electrical Engineering and Acoustics.

The structure of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering changed several times. In 1949, the Department of Parts of Electric Machines was established, and in 1952, the Department of Basics of Marxism-Leninism. Also in 1952, the Department of Electrification of Agricultural Economy was incorporated into the Faculty, and a new Faculty of Communications (now the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics) was separated from it.

In 1969, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering changed the organizational structure based on departments into a structure made up of three institutes: the Institute of High Voltage and Electrical Apparatus, the Institute of Maritime and Industrial Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Electrical Power and Automation, within which 9 scientific departments operated. The organization of the Faculty on the basis of departments was returned in 1991.

In 1996, after the launch of a new field of study, Automation and Robotics, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering changed its name to the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering.

In the academic year 2004/2005, the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering, together with the entire University, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Gdańsk University of Technology and the 60th anniversary of the Gdańsk University of Technology.
