Meeting of the Consultative Council of the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering on December 10, 2019

On December 10, 2019, another meeting of the Consultative Council of the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology took place. The meeting was organized at the premises of Zakład Automatyki i Urządzeń Pomiarowych AREX Sp. z o.o. in Gdynia at the invitation of Mr. Tomasz Buda, Member of the Management Board and Chief Operating Officer of the company.

As part of the meeting, the Dean, prof. Roman Śmierzchalski presented information on the Faculty's activity in recent months, with particular emphasis on the new legal conditions for the functioning of the Faculty and the University after the entry into force of the Constitution for Science. The Dean also discussed the challenges facing the Faculty in connection with Gdańsk University of Technology obtaining the status of a Research University.

In his speech, prof. Śmierzchalski also pointed to the potential threats of the changes taking place, including a reduction in the number of graduates resulting from the changed model of financing universities in Poland and difficulties in re-establishing the academic staff, resulting from, inter alia, from the unsatisfactory financial level of doctoral scholarships, which are not competitive with the offer of enterprises for graduates - potential doctoral students - of Gdańsk University of Technology.

As part of the discussion, the members of the Consultative Council referred to the information provided by the Dean of the Faculty. The statements emphasized the need to further improve the quality of students' education and to ensure cooperation with industry in the field of adapting education programs - in particular in engineering studies - to the needs of the socio-economic environment of the University.

Then, Director Tomasz Buda presented the activities of AREX and the WB Group, one of the largest Polish high-tech companies, specializing in the design and production of technologically advanced solutions for the defense and civil sectors. Members of the Consultative Council could see, inter alia, with the results of the R&D project Development of an innovative drive for mobile platforms, implemented by AREX under the POIR 1.1.1 program, in which part of the research was carried out in the LINTE ^ 2 Laboratory.

The meeting ended with a technical visit of the members of the Consultative Council to laboratories and design and production studios of AREX.
