Diploma of the Year award of the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering for 2017
The award was given to last year's graduate and current doctoral student of the Faculty - MSc Agnieszka Mikołajczyk for her thesis The use of computational intelligence methods for the diagnosis and classification of abnormal states - selected applications in medicine.
The author of the awarded master's thesis used machine learning methods to analyze the image in the analysis of skin nevi and the analysis of blood smears for the detection and counting of defective erythrocytes. Advanced methods of image processing and an unconventional approach to classifying disease states using voting systems and artificial neural networks were implemented in the diploma thesis.
Thanks to the innovative approach, the author of the thesis obtained very high results in the classification of abnormal states compared to the reference results. In the case of the analysis of skin nevi, the specificity index was 82% and the sensitivity index was 82%. On the other hand, in the case of blood smear analysis, the specificity index was 97%, and the sensitivity index was 93%.
The awarded thesis, the promising results of which can be used in medical diagnostics, was carried out at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Control Systems and Informatics under the supervision of Michał Grochowski, PhD, who received the award from the Rector of Gdańsk University of Technology.
