Diploma of the Year award of the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering for 2015
The award was given to last year's graduate and current doctoral student of the Faculty - Piotr Czyż, MSc for his MA thesis Application of GaN transistors in high-efficiency DC/DC converters.
The author of the awarded master's thesis has developed, manufactured and commissioned an innovative DC/DC power electronic converter. To build the device, the graduate used transistors made of a new semiconductor - gallium nitride (GaN). This is the first job at the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering carried out with the use of this technology.
Laboratory tests carried out as part of the diploma thesis confirmed that the GaN transistors used are characterized by low commutation losses, thanks to which they can be used in high-efficiency power electronic converters with high power density.
The awarded thesis was carried out in the Department of Power Electronics and Electrical Machines under the supervision of Artur Cichowski, PhD.
